In September 2025, Leah Gaines-Sewell joined a research cruise to the Main Endeavor Hydrothermal Vent Fields, more than 2,000 meters beneath the surface. Along the way, she helped bring the experience to K-12 students-including students at Osborn Middle School in Phoenix. Their decorated Styrofoam cups made the journey to the deep, creating a hands-on connection to ocean science far from the coastline.

"In Yuma, Arizona, known as the Winter Lettuce Capital of the U.S. and Canada for producing 90% of the leafy greens consumed during the coldest months, I witnessed this work unfolding across vast commercial fields as my Arizona State University classmates and I drove past to the University of Arizona’s Yuma Agricultural Center."
