Training program for advocates of domestic-violence victims to receive ASU Presidential Medal

Survivor Link, a team of Arizona State University educators, students, faculty and community members who work to promote healthy relationships and provide domestic violence interventions, will receive the 2020 President’s Medal for Social Embeddedness.

School of Life Sciences Professor Melissa Wilson researches sex chromosome evolution, sex-biased research and comparative genomics. Wilson states, “It seems really unfortunate that we are going to exclude half of the population. Even if you are understanding the research in one sex, you not understanding it in everyone.”

2020 is a watershed year for women. It marks the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, the 20th anniversary for the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 and

ASU’s CybersecurityDay4Girls was hosted in partnership with IBM to introduce young girls to the field of cybersecurity. Middle school girls are the focus of this program because women are typically underrepresented in cybersecurity roles.

During the United Nations General Assembly in September 2019, the WE Empower UN SDG Challenge and Arizona State University helped launch a program to accelerate gender equality by setting and reaching corporate targets for women’s representation and leadership in business.

The WE Empower UN SDG Challenge celebrated Habiba Ali, the competition’s 2018 winner. The evening before, Ali was awarded the 2019 Economic Empowerment Award through Vital Voices’ Global Leadership Awards Honoree Program.

Amanda Ellis contributed a chapter to the book, "Leadership and Power in International Development: Navigating the Intersections of Gender, Culture, Context, and Sustainability," which received this year's R. Wayne Pace HRD Book of the Year Award.
