PNAS special feature on nature-based solutions for urban sustainability

Distinguished Global Futures Scientist Nancy Grimm co-organized a special feature for the journal PNAS, published July 14, 2025. The special feature, Nature-based Solutions for Urban Sustainability, includes an introduction to the network NATURA, a global review of nature-based solutions, an Indigenous perspective on nature-based solutions written by senior global futures scientist Melissa Nelson, a piece on principles for ensuring just transitions to sustainable nature-based solutions, and four levers to transform how cities adopt these solutions to climate-related challenges.

"The special feature opens important discussion as these nature-based solutions - blue and green infrastructure, ecosystem-based adaptations - become more and more prevalent in cities across the world," says Grimm.

This special feature is in part based on five years of work of the global network of networks, NATURA, funded by the NSF (1927468).
