Designing Science Policy Futures: American Science@250 and CSPO's Vision for Science, Policy, and Public Engagement, this workshop will provide updates on CSPO’s science policy projects and insights on how science policy is changing in the United States as the administration, federal agencies, universities, and scientific associations redesign pathways that connect research to societal outcomes.
The session will also be a chance to meet other policy-interested and policy-curious faculty, center directors, and school leaders from across ASU. Alongside brief presentations from the CSPO team, we will use a small-group table exercise drawn from CSPO’s American Science@250 public forums to explore enduring tensions in the U.S. scientific enterprise and invite your ideas for how to resolve them.
This program explores how the institutions and governance of American science have evolved since the nation’s founding and why they are entering a period of redesign. Using the Consortium for Science, Policy &Outcomes’ American Science@250 initiative as a point of departure, the session introduces CSPO’s new strategic plan for connecting scientific discovery, technological innovation, governance, and public benefit. Rather than viewing science policy simply as funding or knowledge transfer, CSPO focuses on the institutions, partnerships, and public engagement that determine whether research creates meaningful societal outcomes.
Through a panel discussion and an interactive participatory exercise, attendees will experience one of CSPO’s signature engagement methods, explore enduring tensions shaping the U.S. scientific enterprise, and discuss opportunities to collaborate across the Global Futures Laboratory. The session concludes with a conversation about how GFL researchers can help advance a more outcomes-oriented, publicly engaged approach to science and technology.
The Consortium for Science, Policy & Outcomes (CSPO) at Arizona State University is a research center that works at the intersection of science, technology, and public policy. Based in Washington, DC, CSPO works to ensure that science and innovation better serve society by bringing together researchers, policymakers, and the public to explore complex challenges, evaluate emerging technologies, and design more effective and inclusive science policy.
