DOE Fellowship: Alternative Fuels and Feedstocks

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation (CMEI) is seeking four fellows for its Alternative Fuels and Feedstocks Office (AFFO).

The one-year Science, Technology and Policy (STP) fellowship places scientists and engineers with DOE teams working on energy technology research and development in Washington, D.C., or Golden, Colorado. Fellows work with a mentor and may have the opportunity to renew for additional years.

AFFO supports research, development and demonstration involving bioenergy, hydrogen and fuel cells. Four fellows will be selected for:

  1. Fuel Cell Technologies
  2. Production Technologies
  3. Systems Development & Integration
  4. Analysis, Codes & Standards

Fellows may review federally funded research projects, analyze technical reports, conduct technoeconomic analysis, help identify research priorities, participate in proposal reviews, organize workshops, prepare technical publications and present at conferences.

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident
  • Have completed a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree—or complete the degree before the fellowship begins
  • Have a background relevant to the work, with physical sciences and related disciplines particularly relevant

The posting identifies chemistry and materials sciences, computer and data sciences, earth and geosciences, engineering, environmental and marine sciences, and mathematics and statistics among eligible disciplines. Strong analytical, writing and communication skills are also important, and a writing sample will be requested.

Selected fellows receive a competitive stipend, with rates based on academic and professional background. Additional support includes:

  • A stipend supplement to offset health insurance premiums
  • A $5,000 relocation allowance for eligible fellows relocating more than 50 miles from the host facility
  • A $10,000 annual travel and research allowance for scientific and professional development

Applications are submitted through Zintellect and require an application, academic records/transcript, current CV or résumé, and one recommendation. The posting does not currently list an application deadline; applicants should check the opportunity page for updates.
