The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Tribal Health Research Office (THRO) is accepting applications for a STEM-focused fellowship that provides graduate students and recent Ph.D. recipients with practical experience supporting research, evaluation, and data analysis activities related to American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) health.
Based at the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland, fellows will work alongside THRO staff to examine NIH-supported research and training initiatives that impact Tribal communities. Participants will gain experience in portfolio analysis, program evaluation, database development, and the use of NIH data systems and analytical tools.
The fellowship is designed to build skills in analyzing research programs, identifying trends and gaps in health-related activities, and evaluating outcomes across initiatives focused on AI/AN populations. Fellows will also learn how federal agencies coordinate across programs and engage with stakeholders through interagency collaborations and Department of Health and Human Services meetings.
Throughout the appointment, participants will receive mentorship from NIH Tribal Health Research Office staff and develop technical, analytical, and professional skills applicable to careers in research, public health, program evaluation, and science administration.
The fellowship provides a monthly stipend based on the participant's academic and professional background. A health insurance supplement may also be available for participants who elect the ORAU/ORISE health insurance plan.
Appointments begin with a one-year term and may be renewed annually for up to four additional years, subject to funding availability and NIH approval.
Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years old and be either U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, or foreign nationals. Applicants must either have earned a Ph.D. within the past five years in a relevant field or be currently enrolled in graduate school and expected to complete their degree before the appointment start date.
The initial review of applications will begin on July 1, 2026. Applications will continue to be reviewed on a rolling basis throughout 2026 as fellowship opportunities become available.
