SCIENCE IRL: SciComm mini-grant 2026

Skype a Scientist is offering $300-$1,000 mini-grants to support boots-on-the-ground science communication. The Science IRL mini-grants will support projects that put either 1) important science messages or 2) fun, whimsical science messaging in front of people in your community in real life (IRL).

Requirements:

  • Project must take place in the United States
  • Project must be executed in your local community
  • Target audience must be outside of scientists and science enthusiasts
  • Only one application can be submitted per person or organization
  • All permissions required for the project to be work must be granted before submission
  • Project must be completed by February 14, 2027

Preference will be given to:

  • Individuals with experience in science communication
  • Projects focusing on humanity's major crises (climate change, biodiversity, public health, etc).
  • Projects that serve regions/populations where little to no science communication is prioritized
  • Projects that are unlikely to be funded by existing sources
  • Projects that do not require people to "come to you" to participate

Example projects from last year.

Applications open on February 18 and close on March 23, 2026.

Decisions will go out in early April.
