Leigh Cassidy - Founder and CEO of Nibeenabe Ltd
2024 WE Empower UN SDG Challenge Finalist, Latin America and Caribbean Region
Leigh Cassidy’s journey into the world of science and entrepreneurship began unexpectedly. At 24, as a single parent, she embarked on undergraduate studies, driven by perseverance and dedication. This decision led to the invention of DRAM technology during her PhD in Environmental Toxicology at the University of Aberdeen. In 2018, Cassidy sold her intellectual property to SEM, where she served as the lead scientist, honing her skills and opening doors to impactful ventures. The pivotal moment came in 2022 when she won the Conservation X Amazon Challenge. This achievement sparked a profound commitment to empowering women in the Amazon through sustainable technologies, leading to the founding of Nibeenabe Ltd.
Nibeenabe Ltd’s Mission
Under Cassidy’s leadership as CEO, Nibeenabe Ltd is dedicated to revolutionizing the environmental impact of artisanal and small-scale gold mining through innovative technology and sustainable practices. The flagship DRAM Filtration technology efficiently extracts and recovers valuable metallic components from mine tailings, mitigating pollution and minimizing the need for extensive infrastructure. By focusing on recuperating non-target metals like silver, manganese, and copper, Nibeenabe prevents environmental contamination and contributes to the circular economy by reselling these metals. The solution’s low capital and operating costs, coupled with the ability to utilize locally sourced materials, make it accessible and desirable for small-scale operators.
A Personal Mission for Empowerment and Sustainability
Cassidy’s personal mission revolves around leveraging technology for sustainable development and empowering marginalized communities, particularly women. Her journey, from a single parent to a scientist-entrepreneur, underscores resilience, adaptability, and the transformative power of education. These experiences shape her approach, driving her to create meaningful change and leave a lasting positive impact on the world.
Commitment to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
Nibeenabe’s mission aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, advancing the 2030 agenda. Beyond the company’s admirable work in increasing the sustainability of mining processes (SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation), the company empowers women in ASGM communities by increasing their income through the recovery and resale of valuable resources, conserving water resources, and reducing the need for additional mining operations (SDG 5: Gender Equality). Their innovative technology and sustainable business model promote environmental stewardship and economic empowerment in artisanal mining communities (SDG 13: Climate Action).
Through innovative technology and a sustainable business model, Nibeenabe seeks to promote environmental stewardship and economic empowerment in artisanal mining communities. Leigh Cassidy’s journey exemplifies the power of resilience, education, and innovation in driving meaningful change and creating a sustainable future.
