Gilbert Solid Waste Management: Insights from Three Key Reports

Throughout the summer 2023 and fall 2023 semesters, students from the Master of Sustainability Leadership capstone (MSL) program collaborated with the Town of Gilbert’s Solid Waste & Recycling Services on an anthology of waste management practices to inform the Town’s planning and programming. 

Roadmap for Regional Collaboration on Solid Waste

Students explored how Gilbert might create opportunities for regional collaboration in providing solid waste services and assessed how other cities have engaged in models for regional collaboration related to environmental services, especially solid waste services. The students identified several strategies for regional collaboration, including establishing circular economy hubs, introducing incentives for circular economy practices, and engaging with the Maricopa County Association of Governments (MAG) Solid Waste Advisory Committee.

Strategies for Cultivating Circular Economy Solutions

Students provided a circular economy overview and described what circular economy might mean in Gilbert. The Students identified several key areas of research, including short and long-term opportunities for circular waste management, expanding community education, and scaling waste operations.

Opportunities for Innovative Solid Waste Planning and Management

Students explored how Gilbert might develop a new Solid Waste Master Plan (SWMP) for the Town of Gilbert. The students recommended that the Town of Gilbert prioritize developing partnerships with neighboring municipalities and local organizations to expand the Town’s solid waste infrastructure.
