Conservation Innovation Lab PhD candidate Katie Surrey was interviewed for an article on Outdoors.com regarding the recent boat attacks by orcas off the coast of Spain. Katie's dissertation focuses on whale behavior in eco-tourist zones in Panama and she has expertise in human-wildlife interactions in a conservation setting. She warns that the media rhetoric around the topic, especially phrases like "animal uprising" and "whales seeking retribution" could lead to aggression toward marine mammals and long-term harm. Katie reminds us that "we need to ensure that we continue to see animals as fellow beings that have equal rights to these resources and not as competitors.”
