Erin Murphy, Beth Polidoro, and Leah Gerber published a new manuscript in Frontiers in Marine Science that explores how principles from seascape ecology—a discipline that examines the spatial patterns and processes of marine environments—can be applied to management of marine plastic pollution (MPP).
By considering the interactions between plastic debris, ecological systems, and human activities, this approach aims to identify critical areas where interventions can be most effective. The study emphasizes the need for transdisciplinary, multi-scale strategies that encompass the entire lifecycle of plastics, from production to pollution, to develop more targeted and impactful solutions for reducing the environmental and societal impacts of plastic waste.
