Kailin Kroetz appointed to the Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC) of the North Pacific Fishery Management Council
Kailin Kroetz, Assistant Professor in the School of Sustainability, has been appointed to the Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC) of the North Pacific Fishery Management Council. Kailin serves as the CBO Program Lead for Economics and Biodiversity, bringing her knowledge of aquatic and terrestrial species management and economics. The North Pacific Fishery Management Council is one of eight regional councils established by the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act. The Council develops and amends fishery management plans for approval/implementation by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) on behalf of the Secretary of Commerce by:
Setting annual catch limits and accountability measures based on the best available science
Developing research priorities with scientists and stakeholder/industry partners
Preventing overfishing; balancing resource conservation with achieving optimum yield for domestic fisheries
In the United States, most decisions related to fisheries management are devolved to fishery region management councils, where the North Pacific (Alaska) region contributes about two-thirds of US fishery catch by volume and one-third by value. The NPFMC and SSC meet about five times a year, rotating locations to support stakeholders engaging in the policy-making process.In her appointment to the SSC, Kailin will work with other SSC members to advise the council on scientific and other technical matters.
